Our Story
The Waldwick Band was founded in 1954 as the Waldwick Fire Department Band, at a time when many local fire departments organized marching bands for their parade appearances.
Our founder, Dr. Walter Nallin, a professor of music at Bernard Baruch College of the City University of New York, drew players from earlier local ensembles, including Waldwick's Italian Band and the Postal Carriers' Band. Within a year, the band had expanded beyond fire department appearances into full concerts.
In 1968, the group reorganized as the Community Band of Waldwick, Inc., while keeping both its parade and concert units. For many years the band performed regular Friday night concerts at the Bergen Mall in Paramus. In 1992, a smaller ensemble called the Teutonic Knights was added, performing at concerts and Oktoberfests where a more intimate group is a better fit.
Our organization performs about 15 free concerts and parades a year, drawing on a repertoire that spans concert band originals, orchestral transcriptions, Broadway and film scores, big band favorites, and marches — from a library of more than 2,100 titles, including John Philip Sousa originals dating back to 1891. Members range in age from high school students to retirees.
